Corn
Ever read the labels on the food you buy? You should. Most of those tasty fruit juices, sodas, jams, ketchups, and a lot of frozen foods and so-called health foods are injected with high fructose corn syrup, a sweetener derived from corn. Today, high fructose corn syrup is at least a $2.6 billion industry in the U.S., and it’s cheaper to produce than sugar.
But what about reports that fructose is linked to weight gain and obesity? What about large government subsidies allotted to the corn industry? And how does all of this affect Mexican corn farmers and immigration into the U.S.?
Today on Pop and Politics, we’re chewin’ on the fructose fat.
