Happy “Dress-Like-A-Ho” Day!

There wasn’t a parental warning on the site. I didn’t have to fork over my credit card number or proof of age. And yet I’m freely paging through images of hundreds of pouty women clad in the most outlandish of role-playing fetish gear. There oughta be a law … against the superskanky women’s costumes at SpiritHalloween.com!

From sexy witch to saucy maid, from skanky mail carrier to slutty scarecrow, the Halloween-costume wardrobe for women is now entirely built on a base of thigh-high fishnets and push-up bras.

Oh hells no I’m not wearing that

Even the New York Times is ready to hang up the G-string vampire costume this Oct. 31 (you may have to log in, and for this I am sorry)

I’m hoping this skeezy trend is a sex-positive feminist “Take Back The Dominatrix Outfits!” holler, but it’s hard to keep up that optimism while vainly searching for a costume that wouldn’t make my parents cry.

“I think it’s damaging because it’s not just one night a year . … If it’s all the costume manufacturers make, I think it says something bigger about the culture as a whole.” Tanda Word, Texas Tech student, likes being warmly dressed on Pumpkin Day

It’s worse when tacky oversexualization, aka Skankula, starts preying on the kids’ costumes:

I wear more than this to the beach

Yikes! I thought it was just me having trouble finding a costume. I don’t think I’ll be shopping at Spirit.

My comment comes a year late, but it’s relevant considering Halloween is almost around the corner, and yet again these costumes are back in stores. I’m a 26 year old male, and even I see a problem with this. My girlfriend wants me to attend a Halloween party this year, and frankly I don’t want to dress up like a 10 year old, or be a trite pirate or what have you. I’m sure I’ll end up going.. I don’t want to come off as killjoy, but it’s just not me. To make matters worse I don’t feel comfortable having my girlfriend dress up like a slut for an entire evening, having drunken guys hit on her or cop a feel. Sorry if I’m a little defensive when it comes to that.. it’s a two-fold problem with me as the only costumes offered are skanky, and my girlfriend is all about them. It’s a free excuse to dress like a ho in public, and I just don’t agree with it. Maybe I’m just too conservative.

In response to Corey’s comment: I completely agree with you and I don’t think you are too consrvative. My girlfriend has taken to dressing like a whore in public and I won’t stand for it anymore. It’s not right but unfortunately it’s an image that is becoming more and more acceptable in todays society. Girls are being taught by the media that if you don’t look trashy then you don’t look good. It’s sick, perverse and just another thing that us respectable men shouldn’t have to deal with. I don’t see how we are supposed to loosen up and have a good time at a party when we know that there are a bunch of drunken guys checking out our scantily clad girlfriends with the thought of copping a feel going around in their minds.
