No Love in the Auto Industry

Yesterday was a day of love for many, but for 13,000 employees of DaimlerChrysler Valentine’s Day was more like falling under the butcher’s knife. Chrysler announced Wednesday that it would cut 16% of its overall workforce, reduce shifts, and close plants due to declining sales of American trucks and SUVs.

But that’s not it. Chrysler says that an additional 11,000 workers—9,000 in the U.S. and 2,000 in Canada—will lose their jobs over the next three years. Because of these job cuts, the number of new Chrysler vehicles we see on the road will dramatically decrease also. Chrysler says production of new vehicles will fall by 400,000 per year. This is not a good time to work in the auto industry.
