One-time all-powerful special prosecutor Ken Starr is being exposed again as an overrated fumbler, this time it’s in his fight against those Alaska teenagers who have managed to take to the Supreme Court their battle over the right to wave a sign in a public space. Their unassailable message back in 2002, “Bong Hits 4 Jesus,” was pure stoner genius, simultaneously dimwitted-sounding and brilliantly mocking of the political dichotomies set up by American adults—right v. left, redstate v. bluestate, christians v. stoners!
Someone named Douglas Mertz is arguing against Starr on the students’ behalf. In the movie version it would of course be big Bill Clinton, facing off against his nemesis in high style, this time taking deep-lung drags in service of freedom of expression and exhaling rhyming almost-relevant biblical passages for the giggling pleasure of the court.
