Where is the pro-democracy, rah rah freedom rhetoric of the United States right now? When such an overt oppression of the ideals inherent to a democratic and free society is taking place for all of the world to see, there is a half-assed request from the US and the UN that the Burmese government "use restraint" in dealing with the protests. It has obviously been going on for much longer, but in a quieter, much more convenient fashion to ignore. What excuse is there now? Hopefully one of the stray bullets meant for crowd control will somehow unearth a hidden oil reserve so that maybe - just maybe - the Burmese people have an inkling of hope that the Western world will step up the diplomacy here.
