Hi, it's been aout a two year process for my husband and I. When we married he was pending an asylum case and granted legal residence. The DHS consulate approved our marriage, we were seperated and not questioned together. For our Greencard Immigration Court Hearing, the lawyers were unprepared for the Govt. Attourney who discredited our marriage. The attourney got out of controll with questioning my college studies,my unitarian beliefs, and rasing future children Muslim for my husband. The interview turned into an interogation about my standing as a natural born citizen rather than my husand being West African. The Judge allowed me to answer curtly and put a stop to her. He requested an emergency rehearing 25 days later. Our lawfifm, sent there top dog, and his team with us. They made sure there would be a different Govt. Attourney. This time I brought my parents as support and co-sponsors, then the Judge told the Govt. Attourney that I and my husband proved our union beyond any doubt, finiancually and affectionately. I about died, the tears were well worth it. The process has been discriminatory since I petioned the I-130. I think the wite U.S. attourney discredited the DHS consulate because he was black African. I think she got upset when I my husband said I was pagan, which I explained anyway. But when basic college classes became an issue she definatly had a personal vandetta.

[...] My husband and I will soon get $600 from the U.S. government in tax rebates. The IRS will start sending rebates via direct deposit today and via snail mail May 9. Unlike 82 percent of the public, as determined by a Los Angeles Times/ Bloomberg poll, we will spend our money. We are both students, both broke, and both determined to use the money on more groceries, gas and even clothes. Therefore, we are clearly good Americans (well, I’m a good American; my husband, Aung Moe, is a good permanent resident). [...]

In U.K, you have to go through this nonsense just to get legally married, even if your spouse is already in the country.

It's called a Certificate of Approval and all non-EU citizens have to apply for it. You have to answer 20 questions on paper and provide proof of your relationship. It's so demeaning.

I can't remember the color of my own toothbrush, and I vary my showers based on when I exercise.
I guess I had better marry an American citizen.

My Bulgarian husband and I went through the whole process about two years ago in Chicago. The guy that interviewed us was a bit scary mean to us in the beginning. I forgot the reply my hubby gave for the question "Why did you decide to stay here after your visa expired?", but the officer snidely retorted "Wrong answer". He called my mother in Colorado and everything, of course she screens calls so she didn't pick up the first two times he left a message. Finally she answered after hearing my voice and he asked her a battery of questions about my hubby. He did loosen up a bit during the latter part of the interview.

I think often times these people have to take on a different persona so they don't get taken advantage of. You and I might legitimately love our spouses but there are a lot of people that pay people to marry them for a green card. Just look at my hubby's cousin and best friend among others. I don't think they understand that the process and interview is not a walk in the park, especially if you're been in the country illegally. So, just imagine what it is like to have to interview a not inconsequential amount of people that are lying to you or are trying to work the system that you are supposed to protect. Not that I completely agree with everything that's done, just trying to step in their shoes for a moment.

yeah, they're not allowed to ask about any sexual behavior (why the hell didn't your lawyer tell you that? you need a new lawyer), so they ask a lot of questions about lifestyle to see if you really live together. make sure you each know when the other person showers (night or morning) and what the other likes to eat.

and yeah, having worked in immigration, 90% of the INS/CIS people I met SUCKED
