The daughter card

It’s daughter’s month on the Republican side of the aisle. On one hand we got Jenna Bush emerging from the college years to become, according to this month’s Texas Monthly, a mature and self-possessed innercity school teacher and socially conscious author. Jenna has apparently written a well-crafted book for kids about the experience of a young HIV-positive mother….

On the other hand, we got John McCain’s daughter Meghan blogging his campaign and doing a pretty good job of it, too, delivering an informative, anecdotal, photo-filled chronicle of her experience of his running for president. McCain’s daughter likes him. She seems to know him well, too, a fact that’s not to be underestimated as a barometer for how he’d be as a president.

In fact, all candidates for public office should have to have one of their kids blog. We want a Chelsea blog! We want an Andrew Giuliani blog! We want a Romney kid blog! The tone of the thing, the choice of topics and observances, the popculture leanings and competencies— all that would be so much more revealing than the provisional non-realworld policy debates we’re delivered, where the chance to learn about the true nature of the candidate is slim. But informal blogs genuinely authored by the offspring of the candidates? Oh yeah! That’s what we want. That’s what we demand!
