Lunchtime giblets: Daily News Round Up

Scrabulous not so fabulous: The game’s up. (Sorry, couldn’t help it.) The makers of the cult Facebook fave, Scrabulous, have folded in the face of a cease and desist orders from the makers of the real Scrabble, Hasbro. Facebook and Scrabulous voluntarily took the game down, so now dorky diehards will have to use Hasbro’s Facebook app. Though I am not one of the obsessives of Scrabulous, all of my geeky friends were and I have to wonder how many of them will continue to use Facebook as religiously if they don’t cotton to the Hasbro version and get to display their smarty-pants one-upmanship on a daily basis. LOL, ROTLMAO, McCain Thinks He Can Win Cali. Per SFgate.com: John McCain told some folks at an SF fundraiser last night that he will compete, “and I will win in the state of California.” His next attempt at comedy was better: “And following that,” he continued, “I will take back to Arizona all the water that you’ve stolen from us.” SFGate: Politics Blog : McCain in SF: ”I will win California”
VP Tim Kaine? Rumors are swirling that Virigina Guv., Tim Kaine is on the very short list for Obama’s VP. I’m personally already not a fan, since he thinks marriage is for straights only (he opposes it personally), and has only been in office for less than a term, which means that between the two of them, Obama and Kaine wouldn’t even beat Hillary Clinton’s eight years in the big leagues. Also: his name rhymes with McCain. Might be too confusing for people.
apparently hashbro offered the developers of scrabulous a 7 figure deal, which was countered with an 8 figure demand. wow, scrabulous had a lot of nerve.
turns out the legal eagle who counseled scrabulous on that negotiation strategy skipped his copyright 101 course. scrabulous just doesn’t have any legal ammo (unless they can make an equally marketable game that is similar yet non-infringing). anyway, now their 7 figure deal is a 1 figure deal: $0 (if not less depending on whether hasbro will seek damages).
i wonder how much the scrabulous guys were able to profit from their stint…
