Agreed. A duck is a duck and the VMAs are a joke if anyone watches for sheer prestigiousness.

I'm sure Brit was geared towards winning from the get-go, but it was still a shocker (rigged or not). I didn't even know she had a music video out until weeks after it was released. Ditto for Slipknot--where in the heck did they come from?

But the performances and hosts get me every time, either for being epic (Kanye), overdone (Christina Aguilera), or whack (Katy Perry, if you can't even count that one).

Russell Brand, wow...

Great point. The VMA's have always been so worthless as an actual awards show, but at least they have provided some great water cooler moments in past years. All I hear people talking about is how awkward Russell Brand was.

I don't think Britney shocked anyone or 'swept' anything. The VMAs are not respected, difficult-to-obtain awards. They are PR tools, and that's exactly what this year's VMAs were: a PR night for Britney. They basically crowned her queen of MTV again and made no real pretense of competition in terms of the awards.

Not that I have a problem with any of that, but let's call a duck a duck.

Idea for a piece on this site: investigate the nature of the VMAs, how they are decided, what their true purpose is, and highlight some past laughable victories. For instance, any award P-Diddy has ever won on the show would fall into this category.
