Ushering in a new era for television, perhaps, the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards results seem to be a reflection of how much the entertainment industry has spread out across media. With more options than ever, viewers are no longer tuning in en masse to primetime shows, but are checking out critically acclaimed series like “Mad Men” (which took top honors for drama series) in quieter numbers. The L.A. Times has a full scorecard from the event, and dissects the outcome: high honors to shows that barely register in the ratings.

For it’s one! two! three strikes you’re out at the old…stadium. On Sunday the Yankees played their final game in the “House That Ruth Built,” where the Babe was the first to smack one out of the park in 1923. It was a big production, with former Yanks greats donning the pinstripes and making appearances on field once more. Fans were shouting, cheering, even crying. And, of course, the Yanks beat out the Orioles 7-3. New York’s new stadium is set to open in April 2009.

Uncle Sam giveth, and he taketh away. The Bush Administration has announced it now wants to spend up to $700 billion on bailouts to steady the shaken financial markets. That’s more than the Iraq War has cost in the five years since it began ($600 billion). So what wise words have we from our presidential candidates? Both John McCain and Barack Obama support the plan, because failure on such a massive scale in our financial markets is not an option. They also support tax cuts and are promising to spend more on their respective plans if they take office. They both seem to agree that the way to stabilize the market is to take the burden off the taxpayers. So…taxpayers drop $700 billion and then you give us how much back? There’s no quick fix here.

Pussy Galore or Barbara Broccoli: which one broke the glass ceiling? The Daily Telegraph reports that the co-owner of the James Bond franchise defends the depiction of the secret agent’s femme fatale counterparts as progressive and ahead of their time, but Kate Harding of Salon.com has a little fun with it. I mean, which one would you rather have over for dinner, really?
