Dedication to the Craft: ‘Boom’ Grows Up

It’s one of the classic Internet videos. One fateful March night in 2005, Ball State freshman Brian Collins anchored the sports desk for the University’s television station, though he had no sportscasting experience. His painful recap of the day in sports, and his signature phrase “Boom goes the dynamite,” became a sensation.

Collins has moved on to the big leagues now. After graduating from Ball State this spring, he landed a TV reporting gig at KXXV in Waco, Texas. He may have improved his on-air skills some, but the classic Brian Collins long pause and reading stumble still exist.

Collins didn’t let Internet notoriety sidetrack his plans; instead he continued to pursue his goal of working in broadcast journalism. And for that, we’ve got to admire his dedication to the craft.
