For Rolling Stone, Size Does Matter

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

After 27 years as an oversized magazine, and after publishing in a large-size version since its inception in 1967, Rolling Stone switched to traditional magazine dimensions with its Oct. 30 issue, which is on newsstands now.

By trimming one inch from its height and two inches from its width, the magazine will fit easier on newsstand racks, and advertising inserts will be easier to produce and print.

Amuse Bouche: Sleep Through Debate Season?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Consider this your recap. It’s got all the need-to-know deets: where the candidates stand on the issues; which countries they want to take down; and which of them reserves the right to put all differences aside and—woot! woot!—party with Putin. (Maybe Palin can sneak a peek over her backyard fence and give us a play-by-play when that bash happens?)

The Green Report: Oh No, Not the Kangaroos Too….

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Last week it was the penguins, now it’s the kangaroos. According to research by Australian scientists, kangaroos could also become extinct this century if temperatures rise only two degrees Celsius. Researchers at James Cook University issue yet another warning about global warming’s effect on animals.

Speaking of global warming, let’s follow the Brits. British energy and climate minister Ed Miliband said Thursday he endorsed proposals to reduce Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. This legally-binding pledge makes the UK the “the first country to commit to severe cuts in the production of carbon dioxide and other gases responsible for global warming. (more…)

Music News You Can Use: Guys Owned This Week’s Tidbits

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

The Beastie Boys want you to “Get Out and Vote!” The longtime rap trio is headlining a political tour and has added dates to the six swing states. Other headliners include Sheryl Crow, and Tenacious D. Think they can swing the vote? Check out the dates and ticket info here.

Kanye West is so politically incorrect. The rapper has posted a blog about his latest single “Heartless,” which includes a download of the unmastered version, and a very, um, racy collection of photos from the music video shoot. I’m decisively meh about the robotish song, but speechless on the vid. Oh, and by the way, vocoders suck.

The dudes from Franz Ferdinand are back! They have finally released the title and track listing of their third studio album, scheduled to be released January 27. Tracks for the album, titled Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, will be showcased on their upcoming Australian tour. For more info, check here.

Radiohead reveals stats from In Rainbows. About one year after releasing their latest album as a digital “pay what you want” download, Radiohead has finally dropped some numbers on how successful their business-model experiment was. Which makes me wonder, how much did you pay?

And finally, drum roll please…enough about the guys in the music biz, who’s Guy-less now? Bah-dum-bumph…

…ahemA-Rodahem.

LA Fashion Week: Grunge is Back!

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

While there were a couple moments in Christian Audigier “American Lord” show that scored highly on the unintentional comedy scale, overall the line was coherent, cheeky, and very, very hip.

If you haven’t heard, the nineties are back. And how! Remember plaid? It’s back. Remember hole-y jeans and pleated skirts? Check and check. Big metallic peace-sign earrings? Saw ‘em (on staff, not the runway). Embroidered tattoo patterns? Audigier lives for them.

It must be a thing for details, because he also outdid himself on the showmanship. A live band played grunged-out classic rock covers, and the whole thing kicked off with two guys in British Royal Guard uniforms (or some variation thereof), dancing their little asses off, who were then joined by two models in skimpy black frocks and Converse, dancing *their* little asses off. And so the party began.

With the guards flanking the opening to the runway, a slew of models began a 20-minute procession which heavily featured tartan and American flags. There was some sort of commentary going on about the British-American empires. Something that looked a lot like a theory that Americans took British basic and made it cool. Of course, Audigier is French, so I might not know what I’m talking about.
