The Republicans will have to decide whether their party will tolerate a platform of principles that includes a diversity of views regarding policy direction, or whether they will continue to insist on the "cultural" saliency of a set of values that is undistinguishable from a narrowly tailored legislative agenda. Republicans may never become "Big Tent," and perhaps justifiably so, but they would be wise to discover areas of common interest with non-traditional constituencies.
