Sour Milk. The Golden Globe nominations were released this morning, and guess what—Milk, the movie about assassinated gay rights leader Harvey Milk that’s been garnering rave reviews from just about every publication, and won the top award from the New York Film Critics Circle, has been snubbed by the Globe’s voters in all major categories, with the exception of Sean Penn for Best Actor. Let’s hope the Oscars don’t give us the sequel to Brokeback Mountain and award Pineapple Express for Best Picture. The nominees are here.
It’s been three days, and the President-elect’s Blagojevich status has not changed. Move on, people!
In less sexy, but more relevant news, Obama has officially announced former Senate leader Tom Daschle as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Service. Daschle wrote a book about health reform and is considered one of the foremost experts in the field. Hope he figures this out fast, because all those unemployed people are going to be needing benefits pronto.
More bad news for the media. Yesterday NPR (National Public Radio) announced the elimination of 64 jobs, and two of its programs, News and Notes (of which Pop + Politics founder, Farai Chideya was the host), and Day to Day. Where are all these journos going to work?
Stocks slipping yet again. Oil’s slightly up (but still under $50 a barrel, yay for us), but the announcement from the Labor Department about unemployment claims reaching a 26-year high didn’t do much to perk up the market. Will someone wake me when it’s over?
