I am not a journalist, but I rely on web sites like Pop and Politics to gain access to insightful and informative news. I see a connection between the crisis within journalism and some disturbing practices within higher education. Too many institutions of higher education are so driven by the financial “bottom line” that ideals like intellectual curiosity and civic engagement are sacrificed along the way. When too many college students are taught to simply worship at the altar of the American dollar, the desire for quality journalism diminishes. On the bright side, I believe in the system of checks and balances that is built into our government and many institutions with our country. We are all a part of that system of checks and balances in some way, and we must hold to our ideals as Farai said.

Hey folks:

It is so encouraging to hear your voices and to be part of a conversation about this. I have been tempted to leave journalism MANY times. Instead, I have chosen to expand my passions (writing my novel, Kiss the Sky) and my skills. I just learned WordPress recently! When PopandPolitics.com started, Omar Wasow designed it as a custom template... we've been through many evolutions... and its often the energy of the young people we work with that makes me run to catch up.

Nonetheless... sometimes it sucks! After all my time inthe biz being involved in race issues, people still say some astonishing things to my face. I have learned to be better at letting go, but I also have made some serious missteps at times in both dealing with racial politics, office politics, being managing, managing others.

I think that latter part is critical. The bridge between management and staff in most newsrooms is on fire if not already burnt. We need some group therapy in order to set a better direction.

I'm encouraged by your journey and your message to keep fighting for ideals. I'm often in the mentor mode (less formal these days), but still frequent. And I continue to hold up the profession of journalism and its worth, but I also encourage young folks to diversify their skill set in a variety of mediums. Thanks for sharing. I'll see you on the road. jd

Shirrkey once said that American doesn't necessarily need daily newspapers but it won't survive without journalists. What we have in the media that are making profits are pundits ("prophets for profit" in the crazy words of Michael Eric Dyson here at Georgetown), info-tainers, bullcrappers, provocateurs, morons best cast b/c all they are need do is preach to the least common denominator. Too many regular folk consider that journalism.

I'm still at a loss as to what paradigm or model can meet the needs of commerce and journalism. A co-op? A trust or 501c3? It's been a long day and I need to noodle over this more...and of course blog on Farai's book...lol

what a great start to an important conversation. i am concerned about the state of our participatory democracy as journalists lose jobs and journalism becomes even more corporatized.
