This is why it's important to understand your politics. Remember, it was the left that started the KKK and fought against EVERY civil rights act, with the exception of Johnson who was pushed by Dirksen, his secretary of state, a republican as it would have been "political suicide" in a time where rights were becoming the issue of the day. Anyway, pay attention and don't think for a second that this administration is doing ANYTHING good for race issues. If anything, it's just the opposite, which I think at this point anyone can agree with.

Farai,

How do you speak to those in Sharpton, Jackson, and Wright's class? The Klan and others have given way to corporate racism through the media, with people being ostriacized for thought. Race anxiety and hatred is ingrained into the Black culture through the mistrust of those whose skin is white with ridicule of those who are mixed. When you can clean your own house of the hatred and false alarms of racism, then go point the fingers at others.

I love this blog! And I am a huge fan of Farai Chideya! Nevertheless, I can confidently say that I would feel as strongly about the ideas expressed in this blog even if it had been written by another author. I, too, have had conversations with extremists. Some are family members and others have been clients. I've learned to listen to what is left unsaid as they talk. While extremists say "I hate blacks" or "Nonbelievers are leading the United States to destruction," I hear extremists actually saying that they feel overwhelmed and confused in a world that has no shortage of uncertainty. I also see them desperately looking for a reason for the uncertainty. Ultimately, I do believe that it is important to help people (and ourselves) to see that human beings have a lot more in common than appearances suggest.
