Amuse Bouche: Oh No, It’s the Crazy Lady from the McCain Rally

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The woman who called Obama an Arab at a recent McCain rally has made it into the cultural lexicon. She’s got a stint (or, at least her likeness does) on the most recent Saturday Night Live. In addition to questioning his “Arab-ness”, the so-called crazy McCain lady in the skit asks if Obama consorts with terriers, is a Jew and a Muslin (yes, the fabric). Check it out.

“Kill him!”, “Terrorist!”, “Sit down boy!”— Sounds from the latest McCain/Palin rallies

UPDATE: (10.9.08) Just found this on Ben Smith’s blog over at Politico. Man-on-the-street interviews from a McCain/Palin rally in Strongsville, OH.

Secret Service is looking into the “KILL HIM” threat yelled during Palin’s rally in Clearwater, FL. No thanks to the McCain/Palin campaign.

I attended two Obama rallies during the primaries. At each one, Obama made a point of praising Sen. Clinton for her many achievements, calling her a worthy opponent. At one of the rallies during this praise, someone in the audience booed. No words, no threats. Just a boo.

Breaking News: Protestors Interrupt Obama Campaign Event

Friday, September 19th, 2008

While stumping at a Women for Obama rally in Coral Gables, Florida this morning, Sen. Barack Obama was interrupted by a raucous group of protesters holding at least 12 signs with the letters “KKK” and “gay marriage” written on them. It looked as if most, if not all, of the protesters were African-American as they were finally escorted out by security.

CNN quickly froze-frame the shot of the group and their signs could be read:

“Obama endorsed by the KKK.”
“Jesse Jackson hates Obama”
“Blacks Against Obama”
“Obama for Gay Marriage”

All of the signs had “Michael Warns” written at the bottom. The webpage michaelwarns.com appears to be the site carrying the main message of this group. It claims to be “Where you will learn the truth about the current issues of the world politically and religiously.”

The room of Obama supporters, mostly female at this rally, attempted to drown out the voices of the protesters by yelling back, causing a loud uproar that overpowered Obama’s voice temporarily, forcing him to address the dustup.

“Now it’s ok for you to hold up your signs, but just let me finish with what I wanted to say,” Obama finally said.

They did not quiet down and were escorted out without further issue.

“Now let’s get back to work,” Obama said once the crowd and their signs were fully extracted from the event.

Denver 2008

In Denver this morning, something took place that seemed a lot like a time-warp flash-forward to the Democratic National Convention, which isn’t supposed to be coming here until the end of August. This morning the Obama campaign held a rally at the University of Denver that caused traffic jams that made the highways look like a mini-version of the nightmare Los Angeles 405! In the end, I parked in someone’s driveway. Others were just parking on lawns around the city campus. Preliminary reports were putting the crowd at something like 10,000 people. Lines started before 7 am and snaked all around the campus, literally around whole city blocks. It was clear by 8:30 am when they opened the doors to Magness Arena that we weren’t all going to get a seat. So they shuttled us into overflow sections. Half the overflow crowd— thousands of us—filed into the Arena gym and the rest were seated in the lacrosse field outside, snow piles from last week still rimming the edges of the grass.

Waiting for the doors to open, I started asking people why they came out, whether it was their first time to a political rally, etc. The response was always pretty much the same: “Are you kidding me, fool? Look around you?” People talking to one another in the crowd were all saying things like: “Can you believe this?” and “This is insane!”
