Music News You Can Use: Musicians for Charity, and Stuff

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

JT lies about taking a break, but for a good cause… Although Justin Timberlake said that he won’t be working on his solo music for a while, Mr. SexyBack has posted a new song on his MySpace, titled “Follow My Lead,” which will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The download includes interviews and a live performance of the song. It also features new artist Esmee Denters, who is signed to Timberlake’s label, Tennman Records. Pretty hot track!

Rihanna’s following the lead… For charity, that is. The glam singer is featured in a new commercial for Gucci’s upcoming Tattoo Heart Christmas Collection, where 25% of all sales will go to UNICEF. It is a very strange ad indeed, and the songstress looks a bit smug and lonely if you ask me. Chris Brown, where you at? You be the judge, check it here.

Is Coldplay “Lost?”… They are swimming around Internet rumors saying the longtime quartet has broken up. The news was posted by NME early Wednesday, but was taken down after a few hours. Though it might be a false alarm, lead singer Chris Martin might have been the one who set it off.

Blink 182, remember them?… Of course we do. According to former member Mark Hoppus, it seems like a couple of serious events have brought the trio back to talking terms, all after a bitter breakup in 2005. A refresher: Blink’s producer Jerry Finn died in August, while drummer Travis Barker survived a deadly plane crash in September. Suffice to say, another comical music video would be awesome to see.

First MySpace, now YouTube?… Music and the Internet is collaborating once again via YouTube Live for a streamed event that will feature artists like Will.i.am, Akon, Katy Perry, and Joe Satriani. The event will be held in front of your computer screen on Saturday November 22, at 5 p.m. PST and 8 p.m. EST. Really, who’s going to spend a Saturday night in front of their computer? (Ahem…)

Economic explosion? Just the Morning News Roundup

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

And now the posturing begins … In testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will attempt to convince congressional leaders their $700 billion bailout plan will succeed. “If financial conditions fail to improve for a protracted period, the implications for the broader economy could be quite adverse,” Bernanke said in a prepared statement to be given at the hearing.

Sideshow John and Sideshow Barack? McCain and Obama haven’t made significant changes to their economic proposals, despite the obvious changes to the economy and the financial markets. Economists across the political spectrum told the Washington Post the candidates are missing an opportunity by discussing topics only peripherally connected to the current crisis, turning the presidential campaign into a sideshow to the financial meltdown.

Shooting at Finnish school leaves nine dead … A 22-year-old student at a vocational school killed nine people before wounding himself at a shooting in a rural town 180 miles northwest of the capital, Helsinki. The shooting was similar to one that happened last year in Finland. In both instances the students uploaded videos to YouTube showing themselves preparing for the attacks. Police questioned today’s shooter before the attacks, but did not charge him and released him.

Quantum computing expert? The MacArthur Foundation thinks you’re a genius. The foundation notified the 25 winners of its $500,000 fellowship, popularly known as the genius grant. Winners also include an infectious disease physician developing HIV/AIDS treatments and an avant-garde violinist. See the complete list here.

The Emmys stunk and the ratings are just more validation … Preliminary numbers say only 12.2 million people watched ABC’s 60th anniversary telecast, down from the previous record low of 12.3 million set in 1990.

Amuse Bouche: Who’s Bristol Palin’s Baby Daddy?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Back in July, McCain accused Obama of pulling the race card after Obama told supporters in Missouri that he didn’t look like the other presidents on the dollar bill. Well now, someone “loosely” associated with the McCain and Palin duo is truly showcasing the race issue. However, in this particular case, I’m not sure it’s believable.

According to a video circulating around YouTube, an African American guy named Kevin is claiming to be the father of Bristol Palin’s baby. He says that Bristol was sexually intimate with him “outside of her relationship” with Levi Johnston, the reported father. He even asks Bristol to call him, and he would take the video off YouTube.

Kevin actually blames race as the reason the truth about the child’s paternity is being kept a secret. In the video, he said:

I didn’t want to pull the race card but feel like Ms. Palin (he mispronounced as PAL-in, not PAY-lin) is keeping me away from my child to keep her political career in good standing. She understands that an African American male being the father of her child wouldn’t be best for her career.

The kicker to this paternity video is that old Kevin doesn’t agree with Gov. Palin’s politics, and is voting for Obama. And it probably comes as no surprise; Kevin is a “musician working on his urban rap career in LA.”

Amuse Bouche: McCain & Palin Behind the Scenes

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

A friend of mine forwarded this to me last night directly after the Palin speech and it briefly turned my frown upside down. I like to imagine that this is really how it went down between McCain and his so-called “VPILF.” Enjoy!

Amuse Bouche: Grace Jones Shows Everyone How It’s Done

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Grace Jones is releasing her first album in 18 years, called Hurricane. This is the first single, “Corporate Cannibal.” What was that about mellowing with age?
